ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS!

Many thanks to all who have entered the inaugural ASTROPHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2020 competition.
We’ve had so many entries and the standard has been incredibly high – it’s taken our judge Trevor Jones longer than anticipated to reach his decisions  but finally here they are ready to be announced!

Many congratulations to all our winners.  We will be contacting you over the next few weeks to organise prizes and awards.

The PEOPLE’S CHOICE award will be judged by you – a gallery of 60 photos is available for you to select your favourite photo. This will be open for one month and we’ll announce the winner at the end.

OVERALL WINNER PHOTO

OVERALL WINNER

Daniel Thomas Gum – Dragon’s Lair

This is my favourite nightscape image to date. Mungo is a 12 hour drive away from my home in Sydney, but those Bortle 1 skies are the best I’ve ever witnessed at night and photographed. I had perfect conditions for three straight nights with really good seeing throughout. I planned this setting milky way panorama using PhotoPills during the day, but later decided to use the blue hour blend for the foreground with a tracked sky for the cleanest possible image.

EXIF Data: Tracked/Blend/Panorama
FG: Three rows and 21x shots taken at the beginning of blue hour, each shot taken at f/10, ISO 400 & 1.6s (underexposed due to iso invariance of the D780).
SKY: 7x shot tracked panorama with each frame taken at f/2.8, ISO 800 & 180s.

The foreground and sky were both merged using PTGUI Mercator function and blended together in Photoshop to produce the final image.

NIGHTSCAPE WINNER PHOTOS

Trevor’s Comments

This category was the most difficult to decide an overall winner. I chose this image because of:

• Overall composition
• Processing of the night sky and DSO’s
• Unique vantage point
The image is truly breathtaking from any view.

DEEP SPACE WINNER PHOTOS

Trevor’s Comments

Deep Sky – IC 4685
The image showcases the beautiful star colors in this area of the sky, as well as faint dust and dark nebulae. The delicate glowing rim of IC 4685 and subtle areas of reflection nebulae were captured and processed marvelously.

THANKS TO OUR JUDGE!

Many thanks to world renowned Astrophotographer and blogger Trevor Jones for judging our Astrophotographer of the Year 2021 competition.  Trevor, from AstroBackyard undertook the challenging task of determining a shortlist of finalists and he commented on how difficult it was to select so few images from such a large number of high level photographs.

Trevor has developed a big following from his website and through social media because of his thoughtful articles and informative videos, and because of his genuine enthusiasm for astronomy and imaging.
